My Nose Is Still On The Grindstone
Mood:
lucky
For a few, life is a bed of roses, but for most people, it's a struggle to get by and pay off the debts.
My mother, bless her soul, gave me a small inheritance which helped with our car loan, charge cards and some extra mortgage payments.
I must stress, however, that Irene and I bought a five-level backsplit in Brampton only four years ago. We still have a large mortgage on this place. In order for both of us to retire mortgage free, I'll have to work as much overtime as I can during the next few years. Irene doesn't have that option.
I'll also strive to sell my written works during this time as well.
It could be worse. We could be overwhelmed by debt by living beyond our means.
We don't go out a great deal. We don't buy big screen TVs. We love gambling, but we only go the casino twice a year and we never take vacations to the Caribbean, Mexico, or the U.S.
Most of the people I know at work or elsewhere are coasting to a comfortable retirement. My wife and I still face financial challenges that we need to overcome. While I have a pretty good pension to look forward to with the Post Office, she has only meagre government pensions in the future.
Not all baby boomers are well off or rich. I'm sure you know many that are just getting by.
