The Results Of The CUPW Ratification Vote Are In

I am happy to report the Tentative Agreement received a "65%, yes vote" from CUPW posties across Canada. The only constituency that Toronto Local president, Steve Killy, won for his "no campaign" was his own turf in Toronto. Thankfully, the rest of country recognized the bankruptcy of his extremely stupid positions:
"The only solution these militants have is uncompromising confrontations which would result in government interference and sink negotiations. For these "union saviors", it's ok to have a contract shoved down our throats because the only thing these clowns are able to do is rant and rave at anyone who disagrees with them."
Killy and his followers are like "pinko" dinosaurs in the 21st century.

Number One At The Box Office: Underworld
Despite the poor reviews and overly familiar subject matter, "Underworld", the vampire-werewolf flick finished ahead of the pack by a good margin.
Audiences are still seeking thrills, chills and spills from any movie that has a horror/fantasy genre or subgenre. The real world can only take you so far. Other imaginative netherworlds can take you further.

Movie Review 46: Daredevil
The superhero genre has really been overdone lately. Computer special effects make it very easy to do the super stunts. The problem, however, is that the characters and story-line have difficulty rising from the pages of a well known comic book. "Been there, done that." Two stars.

My Friend Dave. He's Got A Great Website

Dave was bragging to his boss one day, "You know, I know everyone there is to know. Just name someone, anyone, and I know them." Tired of his boasting, his boss called his bluff, "OK, Dave, how about Tom Cruise?" "No problem boss, Tom and I are old friends, and I can prove it."
So Dave and his boss fly out to Hollywood and knock on Tom Cruise's door and Tom Cruise shouts, "Dave! What's happenin?!? Great to see you! Come on in for a beer! Although impressed, Dave's boss is still sceptical. After they leave Cruise's house, he tells Dave that he thinks him knowing Cruise was
just lucky.
"No, no, just name anyone else," Dave says.
"President Bush," his boss quickly retorts.
"Yup," Dave says, "Old buddies, let's fly out to Washington." And off they go. At the White House, Bush spots Dave on the tour and motions him and
his boss over, saying, "Dave, what a surprise, I was just on my way to a meeting, but you and your friend come on in and let's have a cup of coffee first and catch up." Well, the boss is very shaken by now but still not totally convinced. After they leave the White House grounds he expresses his doubts to Dave, who again implores him to name anyone else. "The pope," his boss replies. "Sure!" says Dave. "My folks are from Poland, and I've known the Pope a long time." So off they fly to Rome. Dave and his boss are assembled with the
masses in Vatican Square when Dave says, "This will never work. I can't catch the Pope's eye among all these people. Tell you what, I know all the
guards so let me just go upstairs and I'll come out on the balcony with the Pope." And he disappears into the crowd headed toward the Vatican.
Sure enough,half an hour later Dave emerges with the Pope on the balcony but by the time Dave returns, he finds that his boss has had a heart
attack and is surrounded by paramedics. Working his way to his boss' side, Dave asks him, "What happened?"
His boss looks up and says, "I was doing fine until you and the Pope came out on the balcony and the man next to me said, "Who the fuck's that guy on the balcony with Dave?"Dave's Incredible Website

Strike Smart or Strike Stupid: The Last Fax

I'll sure be happy when I no longer have to crusade for union sanity in CUPW and the Canadian Post Office. Voting for the tentative agreement will end Sept/24/03. Hopefully, the "yes side" will prevail and I'll be able to get on with my non postal life and creative pursuits.
Here is the fax:
Back in June, the conditions were ideal for a "smart strike":
* CPC was not negotiating seriously
* There was high solidarity between the locals and the NEB
* The MPs had begun their summer vacation
* The rank and file endorsed a strike mandate by 92.5%
Since that time the favorable conditions in the summer have vanished. What's left now are complex issues and tactics that locals and the NEB are not in agreement with.
* The Toronto Local has waged a non confidence campaign against the ability of the Negotiating Committee to reach an acceptable deal.
* Those on the "no side" have to support either the militant non compromising tactics of the radical malcontents or continue to support the NEB in reaching an acceptable negotiated settlement.
* The severance issue has split the membership despite the 1% increase four years from now.
* The MPs are back in the house which strengthens CPC's negotiating position, ANY NEGOTIATING P0SITION.
* A strike could produce massive losses for Canada Post which could result in CUPW losses in enforced binding arbitration (This has happened before and could happen again.)
* This is not a time for members to have expectations of large painless gains.
The easy strike decision in June now requires a tough strike decision under September conditions. Unfortunately, the ratification vote only touched on the above issues.
I definitely support a "no strike position" at this time. Of course, there are others who support "a strike position", but that position isn't well defined yet. Perhaps, many want to follow brother, Killy and sister, Kolompar to union martyrdom, but I doubt that.
Only a debate could clarify the strategies and tactics of each side. Then the majority could judge what the gains or losses could be and vote accordingly.

Inspirational Thoughts Of The Week
A friend of mine sent this different thoughtful prayer to me today. Hope you get something out of it. I did.
Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the
jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a
single mother who worked nine hours that
day and is rushing home to cook dinner,
help with homework, do the laundry and
spend a few precious moments with her
children.
Help us to remember that the pierced,
tattooed, disinterested young man who can't
make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.
Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking
bum, begging for money in the same spot
every day (who really ought to get a job)! Is
a slave to addictions that we can only
imagine in our worst nightmares?
Help us to remember that the old couple
walking annoyingly slow through the store
aisles and blocking our shopping progress
are savoring this moment, knowing that,
based on the biopsy report she got back
last week, this will be the last year that they
go shopping together.
Heavenly Father, remind us each day that,
of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift
is love. It is not enough to share that love
with those we hold dear.
Open our hearts not to just those who are
close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be
slow to judge and quick to forgive, show
patience, empathy and love.

Mad Union Cow Disease

These are some of my major beefs against the Canadian Union Of Postal Workers. Go unionize thyself can mean different things to different people.
* The National Executive is elected by delegates and not by universal suffrage.
* Local unions seem to be just grievance collectors with little clout on tentative agreements.
* Ratification meetings are just info/PR sessions with minimal debate on the issues.
* Professional union types propagandize the membership without inquiring to what individual opinions might be.
* Militant unionists have a tendency to demonize management or anyone else who disagrees with them.
* What happened to the 75 millions dollars for grievances from the 2000 contract?
* There were five different presidents at the Toronto Local during an eight year period. Most quit because of the backbiting and the hatred in the local.
* There should have been a multi union crusade against monopolist insurance companies like Great-West Life. There wasn't.
* Union rhetoric that crashes into the reality wall like "No Retreat No Surrender" "No Power Greater". Rhetoric is no substitute for being able to have the smarts to deal with difficult situations with CPC or CUPW. If you need superman, read a comic book.
* Not having "a strike smart plan" that is agreed upon by both the NEB and the locals.
* Lack of solidarity between the NEB and some important locals. Paid executives fighting each other and not the boss. You either "fight smart" or you "fight stupid." Our union dues is going for this?
* Union meetings that discourage dissent and participation.
* Union conventions that are held in Cuba or other vacation spots.
* Political groups like the communists who try to hijack the union to promote their own beliefs.
* Whining, lazy and irresponsible union leaders who let an arbitrator decide what kind of contract the members should have.
* Incompetent union leaders who blame their inability to get a contract on something else like government interference. Postal contracts are a terrific challenge. The bigger the adversary the bigger the victory. If the present negotiators can't do the job. Pay professionals (Like Buzz Hargrove) who can do it.
* Deluded ideas of what we can get in negotiations (e.g. In 1975, we were told we could get more than the letter carriers got which was $1.70 hr. raise. After six weeks of striking, we settled for $1.70 hr. raise.) Just yelling at someone to give you more because you deserve it doesn't work. It's a package deal that's a win-win situation for both sides that wins the day.
* WE DESERVE OUR FAIR SHARE- The union should support the senior members who have paid their dues and done their strike time (including illegal strike time) more. We fought for the fired guys in Montreal. We fought for PO1, keyers. We fought for pregnant mothers. We fought for oppressed casuals. We fought for letter carrier issues. What do you think our fair share should be?
