Las Vegas Revisited

Everytime, we go to Las Vegas, Elvis seems to look shorter.

We also took some pictures of short Elvis's brothers and scenic sights from our room.

The weather was ideal about 70F for the time we were there. We gambled a lot and finished ahead a bit.

We discovered the best places for slots, beer and buffets in Vegas.

The Palms Casino is definitely the best place for slots. They even advertise this broadly.

For micro brewed beer, it was a tie between Ellis Island Casino and Main Street Station Casino. The beer was good and cheap, less than $3 for a large long neck draft.

The best buffet goes to Fremont's Casino's "Paradise Buffet". You can find two-for-one buffet coupons for this restaurant and others in Las Vegas coupon books or on the internet.

I did well with my match play coupons from American Casino Guide. I won seven times and lost three. Match play is where the dealer matches your bet with an extra bet usually $10.

Altogether I broke even with craps, blackjack and poker, I've learned enough about those games to feel comfortable playing them. Check out the links above to get gaming insights.

At the Golden Nugget, we used a two for one coupon to buy tickets for a "country superstars tribute performance". This was an excellent show with great singers and musicians. Three stars. "The Big and Rich Tribute" was the best.

The seven days passed quickly because we spent some time in "Downtown Vegas" enjoying the free street entertainment, the cheap gambling, the cheap beer and the cheap buffets.

The final word goes to Elvis with "His Viva Las Vegas".

What goes on in Las Vegas doesn't necessarily have to stay there.

Remembering Whitney

I was shocked to hear about Whitney Houston's death while riding a bus in Las Vegas. I wouldn't say that I was a big fan of hers. Radio stations played her hits so much during the 1980s that I got sick of listening to them.

After that, I took her for granted and put her out of my mind. Power ballad singers were ok, but I liked other kinds of music more.

However, I did have a special spot for Whitney in my heart. Inspirational songs like "The Greatest Love Of All", "One Moment In Time" and "I Look To You" really moved me.

I listened to her greatest hits on YouTube and here are the one that I like the most:

  1. One Moment In Time: This is a song that inspires us to a higher level of performance that most of us can only dream about.
  2. I Will Always Love You: It's the song of a deep love for someone sadden by loss. Absolutely beautiful.
  3. The Star Spangled Banner: The best performance of the U.S. national anthem ever done.
  4. The Greatest Love Of All: Be true to yourself is the message in this great song. It's right up there with Ray Steven's "Everything Is Beautiful".
  5. I Look To You: Whitney's last hit in 2009 returns to her inspirational roots.
  6. I Want To Dance With Somebody: One of the top ten disco songs of all time. Goodbye "Disco Duck".
  7. How Will I Know?: Whitney sung punchy pop songs like no one else in the 1980s.
  8. Where Do Broken Hearts Go?: Songs about loneliness and trying to relate were themes in many of Whitney's tunes.
  9. Didn't We Almost Have It All?: This song still sounds great after 25 years.
  10. All At Once: Many fans are singing this song to Whitney, right now.

I hope that people aren't distracted by the sideshow  with Bobby Brown. Whitney was an artist that sung about things that were close to her. Hopefully, we can get closer to her with the songs above.

I saw Oprah's exclusive interview of Whitney last night, Feb/16/12. It moved me to tears many times. Her life would make a terrific bio/pic, but who would play Whitney?

What was stopping Whitney on the comeback trail? This article that I read recently may hold the answers. She seemed to have a desire "to see Jesus" and to meet him. In actual fact, this was tantamount to giving an "It is finished" to her life's work. Her future was pointed towards a trip to Heaven and an interview with the founder of the Christian Faith. This might be considered a promotion.

Ancient Aliens And The Brotherhood Of Christ

"Ancient Aliens" is one of the best shows on television. When it comes to alien contact, this series seems to hit all the bases from dinosaurs to Hitler's Germany.

What is left behind from these "superior" civilizations are huge stone monuments like the pyramids, Easter Island, Stonehenge and Peru's Machu Picchu. Great tourist spots, but nothing spiritually enlightening .

There is also evidence that a high tech anti gravity device was used to fit the stones in place.

Perhaps, of greater interest were the alien contacts with Moses, Mohammad, Joseph Smith, Tesla, and Nazi Germany.

I've also discovered a website on "The Top Ten Alien Mysteries On Planet".

Without a doubt, there has been prolonged alien interference and manipulation of humans on Earth. Some aliens have supported oppressive dictators who used human sacrifice on a regular basis. Others have manipulated DNA to get more compliant worshipers or warriors. Their track record of helping human beings was poor, no cures for diseases, no techology to feed the poor, no education to bring man out of the dark ages.

Jesus Christ on the other hand restored "The Immortal Spiritual Brotherhood Of Melchizedek (i.e. Christ)" to the level of "The Q Continuum".

Ancient Aliens has never taken their viewers to a higher spiritual level. That would be the only criticism that I have of this superior History Channel Series.

It's good to remember the past no matter how bad it appears.

My Top Ten Romantic Songs

Romance can take your breath away, especially if there's a nice sunset or a gentle love song in the background.

Everyone has their favourite love songs of all time. There's even a top 100 song list in pop/country of those tunes.

I love romantic music from the 1920s to present time. However, when I made a list of my personal favourites. These were the ones that stood out the most:

  1. Hallelujah by KD Lang: Probably, the best version of Leonard Cohen's best song.
  2. Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi: John pours his heart out in a power ballad that has impact.
  3. From This Moment by Shania Twain: Probably, the best wedding song ever written.
  4. Something Stupid by Frank and Nancy Sinatra: Old blues eyes and his daughter bring back nostalgic memories from the past.
  5. Sometimes When We Touch by Dan Hill: A sensitive man expresses his true feelings.
  6. Right Before My Eyes by Ian Thomas: Romantic fantasies take shape in unusual ways.
  7. Can't Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley: This video makes Elvis look and sound like a love god.
  8. Lady In Red by Chris de Burgh: I remember dancing to this song with a special lady the first time I heard it.
  9. I Just Called To Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder: When you love somebody, it makes feel happy, very happy.
  10. Harvest Moon by Neil Young: It's like an old time love song redone for present day lovers.

Most people love songs that they can slow dance to.

It's great when you can find someone to share those special songs with.

Top Ten Sexy Songs Of All Time

This list isn't about the sexiest videos of all time or dance/disco music that may be sexy as well. It's about songs that have hot lyrics with a hot beat.

Please note that Billboard has its own top 50 list on this subject. I agree with some of the choices, but disagree with the others.

What turns a person on is subjective from one individual to another.

Of the songs below, only Elvis Presley made the list twice.

It's noteworthy that Rod Stewart, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber, The FugsMacLean/ MacLean and Ray Stevens didn't make this list. The last three relate to the novelty aspect of "hot material" rather than the stimulative effect of it.

This is, probably, the hottest top ten list I'll ever make. I hope you enjoy the songs and performers:

  • Burning Love by Elvis Presley: I've sung this song many times at karaoke. It's a hoot.
  • Hot Stuff by Donna Sommer: Probably, the best disco song of all time.
  • Baby One More Time by Britney Spears: She played the seductive teenager very well in this steamy video.
  • I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry: Sexual experimentation never sounded so good.
  • Do You Want To Touch Me by Joan Jett: The queen of 80's rock moved me with this one.
  • Chick A Boom by Daddy Dewdrop: The song has a wild beat with wild lyrics.
  • You're The One That I Want by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta: Olivia goes from Sandra Dee to an 80's rocker in a blink of an eye.
  • Big Hunk Of Love by Elvis Presley: Elvis gets the ladies going with a second helping of burning love.
  • Kiss You All Over by Exile: The song really delivers what is suggested in the title.
  • Honey, Honey by Abba: Both the words and movements of the singers communicate sultry excitement.

Some runners up for the hottest tunes of all time might be Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell", Barry White's "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Baby", The Pointer Sister's "Slow Hand", Madonna's "Like A Virgin" and Georgia Gibbs, "Kiss Of Fire".

When you want to get in the mood for a little or a lot of loving, great background music really helps.

My Top Ten Ways To Create A Healthier Lifestyle In 2012

Despite what the mouse is doing above, lifting heavy weights is not a top priority in this top ten list. The priorities start with 1,2,3 and descend from there. Hopefully, you'll find something on the list and links that can work with your lifestyle.

I've discovered that getting fit can be fun too.

  1. Sleep: If you don't get enough sleep your body can go to hell in handbasket. A good bed and good pillow is essential. Maybe, you might have to do some relaxation techniques before you go to bed. I find that a "hot toddy" or a "nightcap" also helps.
  2. Relaxation: I've found that the sounds of rain and ocean waves can be very relaxing. Meditation can also help if you use techniques that really work for you.
  3. Learn Something New Everyday: When our minds are challenged by the unknown or something new, it brings about a greater interest in life and self esteem. An old Indian said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.
  4. Intense Exercise: This is exercise that raises your heart rate and makes you sweat. Obviously, if you're not very fit, mild workouts would be the thing to do. A proper exercise program should be implemented with advice from a fitness consultant.
  5. A Healthy Diet: This would include at least two glasses of water a day and lots of fruits and vegetables. Frequently, I drink a V8 juice to meet my veggie quota. Fish is a great source of omega three and nuts can be a good source of protein. If you eat too much fat or carbs, you have to exercise more to burn off the calories.
  6. Eating And Drinking Antioxidant Foods: This could be green tea, blueberries, and acai berry, but my personal favourite is pomegranate juice.
  7. Saunas: Not only does sweating relax you, but it's also a good way for the body to clean toxins out of the fatty tissues. Saunas are used around the world from the Turks, to the Finns, to the Russians, to the Native Americans.
  8. Developing A Good Sense Of Humor: Laughter is the best medicine for many conditions like stress and depression. You can find humor in just about every situation possible:(e.g. "Top Ten List Of Things To Do After You're Dead", "Top Ten List Of Fridge Magnets", "Top Ten List Of Newfie Sayings", etc).
  9. Multivitamins: I'm not completely certain that food produced today has the same nutritional value as food produced 30 years ago. Therefore, I believe in megavitamins.
  10. Speciality supplements like Garlic, Nopalea, Matol, and Ginseng. See a Doctor of Naturopathy before taking these supplements. What is good for the goose, may not be good for the gander.

We're living in a world where there is more than a thousand ways to die. It's also helpful to get divine protection against those things that could kill us or leave us chronically disabled, diseased and generally screwed up. Check out ww.prayway.com. You can't take health and well being for granted.

I wish you and your family a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Looking Back On 2011

2011 was memorable to me in different ways. I'd like to mention what and who stands out the most.

  1. With sadness, I remember the legacies of Apple founder, Steve Jobs, movie star, Elizabeth Taylor and Canadian NDP leader, Jack Layton.
  2. While there were many top stories of 2011,  the one the impacted me the most was the death of Bin Laden. For 10 years, they chased this terrorist in Pakistan and Afghanistan until they got him. Why so long???
  3. On the lighter side, there was the top ten bogus 911 calls. The cat that ate a woman's hamburger tops this list.
  4. Then there was the list of the top ten words that should be banished from the English language. Yes, "amazing" was overworked, but "mancave" was and still is cool.
  5. It was a weird year for songs and singers in 2011. Performers like Rebecca Black and Justin Beiber were both very popular and unpopular. Fortunately, there were quality songs done by entertainers like Adele and Lady Antebellum. Personally, when I listen to Justin Beiber, I pine for the good old days of Donny Osmond's "Yo Yo".
  6. 2011 wasn't exactly a stellar year for movies: too many sequels, too many disappointed fans. Check out the critics. "Paul" with Simon Pegg was my favourite movie for the year.
  7. Full Tilt Poker was the crappiest online poker website of the year. Many players including myself are waiting for a refund from these clowns.
  8. "Ancient Aliens" on the history channel is one of the best TV shows of 2011. By combining historical data, myths, experts, and ancient artifacts, the stories are brought to life as "alien visitations or meddling".
  9. Best and worse phoney of the year has to go to Kim Kardashian, even her butt isn't as real as it looks.
  10. There were lots of heroes in 2011. CNN chose 10 of them. However, my personal choice was army vet JR Martinez on "Dancing With The Stars". He was an inspiration for anyone with a painful physical or mental afflication.

Happy New Year and all the the best for 2012.

The Aftermath Of Christmas

While Christmas is a fun and meaningful time of the year, it's also hectic for those who put up lots decorations and invite lots of family over for Christmas and Christmas Eve dinners.

My wife, Irene, put up many Christmas displays and ornaments that thrilled our guests on Xmas Eve and Xmas Day. You can check out these displays on my Facebook page www.davebarron.info. Of course, all of these dolls/toys/villages and nativity scenes have to be put back neatly after Christmas.

As I stated before, Newfies really know how to celebrate Christmas. As well as the parties, there was a Christmas Eve dinner of salt fish, potatoes and sweets.

The next day, Irene served a "jiggs" Christmas dinner to ten close relatives. Afterwords, there were three pies, a cake, cookies and ice cream offered for dessert. It was a wonder that we didn't walk away weighing 20 lbs extra.

The meal and the clean up was a lot of work for the host (me) and the hostess (Irene), but it was worth it for another great reunion of the Noseworthy clan.

Fortunately, I have a cheap gym membership with Brampton Recreational Services to work off the additional pounds.

Past the eggnog.

Getting Ready For Christmas

What would Christmas be without family, children and  a funny looking Santa Claus? The above is a photo of the yearly, Noseworthy Christmas party.

There were close to 30 guests at the party. From left to right above, Joe Noseworthy(the host), Cecilia Hussey(great niece of Joe), Santa (Bryant Noseworthy, Joe's son), Mathias Parsons (nephew of Joe), Tony Sparkes(grandson of Joe), Blair Noseworthy(Joe's son) and Joe's granddaughter, Jessica.

These parties were and still are part of Newfoundland Christmas traditions. To see more pictures on these events, and minature villages,  unusual Christmas dolls, etc. checkout my Facebook website at www.davebarron.info.

Newfoundlanders also have their own Christmas music which harkens back to the good old days.

The "Mummer's Song" and "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" are two great examples of Newfy Christmas music.

There's more to "Preparing for Christmas" then putting up a tree, sending out cards and buying Christmas presents.

My Newfoundland extended family has taught me a great deal about the holiday spirit.

Part Of The Music Mix: Dance Medleys And Exercise

Starting in the 70s, dance medleys became hot items at any wedding, party or disco.

The original medleys were called "Stars on 45" and featured groups like The Beach Boys and Abba.

As time passed, medleys from various decades became popular like 50s and 60s oldies, Jive Bunny, Disco Fever, 90s Techno Dance Music, etc.

I use some of these dance medleys in my exercise routines. The high energy and non-stop playing of these songs help me on the treadmill and with the weights.

Any age has its own great medleys. I found this "Beach Party Dance" performance on YouTube.

There's no excuse for not getting up and moving on the dance floor or in the gym. Your health and well being can be improved with groovy fast music.
