A Prayer For Haiti
Mood:  sad

While I have given money to reputable charities for Haitian relief efforts, I've also published this prayer on www.prayway.com:

Dear Lord,

"More than anything relief goods and services have to reach those who need them the most. I pray that you will protect those who are carrying food, water and medical supplies to the victims of this tragedy.

I pray that you will end "the aftershocks of earthquakes" that are still terrorizing the Haitian people.

I pray that the looting will end and Haitians will cooperated with the charities and government forces that are trying to help them.

I pray that the "World Bank", "The IMF" and the wealthy nations of the world will put Haiti on the path to economic recovery after this crisis is over".

I'm bless to live in Canada where we sometimes suffer from snowstorms, rainstorms and an occasional tornado. Hurricanes and earthquakes seldom hit us and when they do they are usually mild.

I believe that Christians are not only physical stewards of the earth, but spiritual stewards as well. "To whom much is given will much be required".

Dave And Irene's "Cheap" Las Vegas Vacation
Mood:  a-ok

The highlight of our vacation was seeing "Jubilee" at Ballys. It was like seeing hundreds of old time musicals rolled into one. The costumes were great, the dancing was great and the singing was terrific. Added to that were incredible special effects like the sinking of the Titanic which you really have to experience to appreciate.

Jubilee has been running for 27 years and I can see why. It was and still is the best that Vegas has to offer.

Part of the background to this show is explained below:

Enjoying Las Vegas includes finding cheap gambling and cheap food. This we found at Terribles, The Sahara and O'Sheas. Terribles has the cheapest buffet in Las Vegas. The Sahara has multiple one dollar specials like blackjack, beer and hotdogs and O'Sheas actually has the cheapest poker tournament with a $45 buyin with no rebuys.

The Fremont Experience downtown includes casinos, free entertainment like Don Maclean's great music video on "American Pie" and cheap souvenirs like four baseball caps for $10.

We had two for one coupons for meals and shows from "Las Vegas Perks". We also had a timesharing room where we could make our own meals at "The Jockey Club".

You can spend big bucks in Las Vegas. Fortunately, we were able to live within our budget by breaking even on the gambling and not paying too much for the food, entertainment and souvenirs.

Hope you have a great time there without going bankrupt.

A Cheap Las Vegas Vacation

From Jan/11/10 to Jan/17/10, I probably won't be writing any blog entries because my wife and I will be in Las Vegas. Hopefully, my websurfing for cheapo entertainment, gambling and food will pay off.

Here the results so far. You can check out these links for cheap or free stuff. First gambling:

  1. Best economical poker tournaments ($25) on the strip: The Tuscany Casino.
  2. Cheapest backjack ($1) on the strip: The Sahara Casino.
  3. Cheapest crap table ($3) with good odds: The Casino Royale.
  4. The best slots are downtown where you get the best odds.

There are many excellent buffets and shows around town and the best way to experience them is with 2 for 1 coupons.

The free attractions are found on this website here.

We've been to Las Vegas before and got many show tickets by participating in "Time Sharing Lectures". This can take up to two or three hours of your time, but the payoff was three free shows. We're not doing that this time.

Hope you benefit from my research.

Happy Birthday Elvis

I first heard Elvis on the Dorsey show back in 1956. He sang "Tutti Fruiti" and I laughed at the guy's performance. I thought he was a comedy act.

Of course, this was my introduction to Rock and Roll which was called Rhythm and Blues in those days. It took me quite awhile to get into this new sound, because I was a big fan of Pat Boone and Guy Mitchell.

You might describe me as a soft rock kid who viewed Elvis as a hard rock biker. Over the years, however, my appreciation for Elvis grew when he did songs from every genre, including R & B, country, pop and even opera like "Surrender". Exposing yourself to Elvis is simply exposing yourself to great music of any kind.

I even put my favourite rare Elvis recordings on a website. Check it out here.

There has always been a darkside to rock and roll because it unleases subconscious memories. A great song by Wayne Newton called "The Letter" brings home the darkside of rock and roll fame.

Elvis is 75 today who continues to sing young songs in his movies and on records. He changed music more than any person in history. To me and many others he will always be The King.

Niagara Falls: The Festival Of Lights
Mood:  a-ok

Before the year ended, we managed to see "The Niagara Falls Festival Of Lights". The Festival's themes ranged from bibical scenes like Noah's Ark above to adventures in Canada's wilderness.

The spectacle is unique in Canada. It was a big thrill for me because it was the first time that I've seen The Festival of Lights.

Please enjoy a YouTube video of the Falls in the dead of winter. Man and nature come together in perfect harmony.

Top Ten Songs Of The Decade: 2000 To 2009

In a decade marred by great evil from terrorists (e.g. 9/11), the environment (e.g. Katrina) and business (e.g. the recession of 2008 and 2009), it was good to know there was a higher power that we could turn to for protection. That's why "Jesus Take The Wheel" is in top spot.

Individuals, governments and scientists can only do so much to assist mankind's survival. Luckily, there are spiritual stewards over the Earth who can make things go right.

In second place, I selected the hope-filled message of Aselin Debison's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow/Wonderful World".

The others are great songs that I feel will be remembered 30 years and more from now:
  1. Jesus Take The Wheel/Carrie Underwood
  2. Somewhere Over The Rainbow/Wonderful World/Aselin Debison
  3. How Long?/The Eagles
  4. I'm Gonna Getcha Good/Shania Twain
  5. A New Day Has Come/Celine Dion
  6. I Kissed A Girl/Katy Perry
  7. I Dreamed A Dream/Susan Boyle
  8. Bad Day/Daniel Powter
  9. Baby One More Time/Britney Spears
  10. Home/Michael Buble

I also managed to find a list of the decade's top ten worse songs. It was a hoot. I hope you'll have a laugh too.

My Top Events Of The Decade: 2000 to 2009

Life Magazine: "The Decade That Changed The World" is not available online, so here's a link to "Life 2009 In Pictures".

There were many wonderful and not so wonderful events that happened from 2000 to 2009. Of course, this is my blog and I'm emphasizing what is most memorable to me.

There are no sports events or movies on this list. Canada winning another gold medal at the Olympics isn't earth-shattering news. Big box office movies with state of the art special effects are not big surprises. This just indicates progress in the delivery of high tech productions.

I didn't emphasis natural disasters or wars either because they've been with man since day one.

Just about everybody would have a different top ten list on this subject. Feel Free to make a comment on this list or any other you may have encountered.

Below is a list of "happenings" in this decade that grabbed my attention the most.

  1. Wikipedia replaces Britannica as the world's top reference source. In this blog, I have many links to Wikipedia articles and none to Britannica.
  2. Blogs replace diaries as the main source of self expression and personal life documentation. This includes Facebook, MySpace and Twitter which are different kinds of blogs. With the use of the hyperlink, blog words or phrases can reach other websites on the internet. For example, Ann Frank's life during World War Two can be examined on this website.
  3. Most of you know, that 9/11 was the big news story of the decade, but added to that are 9/11 conspiracy theories which make you think and wonder.
  4. I was moved to tears by Michael Jackson's funeral. I was surprised to find out that he had contributed so much to so many charities.
  5. Last year I wrote an article entitled "The Top Ten Poster Boys Of The Financial Crisis". It makes you wonder what kind of "Work Ethic" permeates the world of investment banking.
  6. All capitalists don't come from the same place. Warren Buffet set the best example of the decade by donating 36 billion to charity.
  7. Despite the publicity given to Itunes and Napster, free music downloads still occur from Limewire and Bittorrent(for now).
  8. Without any expensive music video or hype, middle-aged Susan Boyle obtained stardom from a YouTube video which you've probably seen.
  9. Just being the first black U.S. President doesn't put Barack Obama on this list, but what he did recently with health care reform puts him there. He achieved something that no politician has been able to do in the history of the U.S.
  10. Corner Gas has become the most popular Canadian TV series of all time. Sure it's stupid, but sometimes very funny. It's definitely not as stupid as "Trailer Park Boys". Life in Canada can be wonderful.

Giving For Christmas And Throughout The Year

A few days ago, I heard someone from "The Scott Mission" talk about their charity work which included meals for the poor. I remembered that many years ago, the Scott Mission helped me out when I was going through hard times.

In the past, I contributed to "The Yonge Street Mission", "The Salvation Army" and "The United Way", but never to The Scott Mission which helped me more than any other charity.

On Dec/24/09, I made my first donation to the mission. It felt very good doing this.

Christmas is more than just the season of partying and gift-giving. It's a time to give back to those who helped you out and to create a strategy to help others less fortunate than yourself throughout the  year.

Put a little love in your heart.

My Top Ten Favourite Christmas Songs
Mood:  lyrical

Some of my top ten songs are presented by the original artists like Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Josh Groban. The others have interesting animation or background pictures which enhance the great melodies.

There are other great tunes that didn't make this list, but they can easily be found on YouTube. This includes "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree", "Jingle Bell Rock", "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer" and many Christmas carols.

Please enjoy these Christmas musical videos. They were made with love from the people who created them:

  1. Christmas In Killarney by The Irish Rovers(above)
  2. Run Rudolph Run by Chuck Berry
  3. Marshmellow World by Dean Martin
  4. O' Holy Night by Josh Groban
  5. Silver Bells by Johnny Mathias
  6. Winter Wonderland by Pat Boone
  7. White Christmas by Bing Crosby

On the lighter side, you can check out some novelty Christmas songs on this website.

Poker After Dark, The Cash Game
Mood:  incredulous

I have nothing against high stakes poker games but most players would not be able to afford them.

Over the last two weeks, I've watched "Poker After Dark, The Cash Game" with Phil Hellmuth, Tom Dwan, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Patrick Antonius and Gus Hansen.

The poker was good and sometimes outstanding, especially from Dwan and Ivey. They moved their game to a higher level with practice in big cash internet poker games. Negreanu referrred to this in his recent blog entry:

"Ivey, Dwan, and Patrik just play at another level. In order to compete with them you have to work very hard, play lots of hours, and study your weaknesses. I'm willing to admit they are far better than I am at no limit cash games, but I think Hellmuth actually believes he is the "best no limit hold'em player in the world by far," (his words not mine). He's either lying to the public when he makes those statements, or, he genuinely believes that. Either way, he's either lying or completely delusional."

There was much to learn from their play. Unfortunately, the cash game was degraded and trivialized by "poker prop bets" and a few "table all ins". How can one establish the top cash players in the world by random "coin flips" and "card calling"?

With a basic stake of $100,000, one player went up $500,000 and the losing players went down $100,000 each time they did this. Why not just give the money to charity, rather than making it part of a high stakes poker game?

Obviously what is needed is a high stakes poker tournament where the minimum by-in would be $100,000. Why not go global with such a tournament and see who the best cash players are? Limit rebuys to $300,000 per individual per table. Each game would run for a week and the person with the most cash would move to the next table of winners.

On a personal level, I had a great November playing poker, but a lousy December. For the year, I'm probably down $40 or $50.

For the rest of 2009, I'm playing for only play money which I'm doing well at: five first place finishes out of nine games with two seconds.

While there's no limit on how much you can win at poker, you have to decide beforehand how much you can lose (for entertainment purposes, of course). You have to control the game or the game will control you.(i.e. Know your limit and play within it.)
