Movie Review 49: Cats And Dogs
The "War Between Cats and Dogs" becomes a special effects bonanza in this James Bond parody. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Characters are still the basic good guy, bad guy stereotypes. Enjoyable for those ten and under, but too stupid for those older. Two and a half stars.

Movie Review 48: Christmas Eve

I only discovered this buried treasure last night.
A wealthy older woman orchestrates a final holiday get-together with her adult grandchildren and estranged son. Although over 70, this is one of the finest roles that I've seen Loretta Young in. Looks beautiful even in the golden years. Have lots of kleenex handy. None of the major characters die, but the ending is very moving. Three and a half stars.

Customs finds rocket launcher, grenades(Toronto Sun Article)

A rocket launcher capable of shooting down an aircraft was among 14 caches of weapons seized entering the country through a Mississauga postal plant(WLPP, TEO). The explosive weapons, which include grenades, shell casings and munitions, were among 14 shipments intercepted between Apr/2001 and Mar/2003, Customs said yesterday.
The German-made rocket launcher, which is designed to be fired from the shoulder and can be outfitted with heat-seeking missiles, was seized at the Gateway Postal Facility in Aug/2001, the agency revealed in a hazardous mail report to employees.
Customs said the weapon arrived by aircraft from Germany and was desined for Quebec. The names of the importer and exporter of the weapons wasn't released.
Officers said the Mississaga plant was evacuted when the weapon was found in a wooden crate. Peel police destroyed it.
Customs spokesman John McCormack refused to comment on the seizures yesterday.
Emerson Waugh, of the Customs Excise Union, said the weapons pose concerns for both national security and the health and safety of officers, who have to open and inspect incoming packages and crates.
"A lot of people like Custom's and postal workers can be injured if one explodes," Waugh said. "This shows the vulnerability that now exists."
Even though most of the weapons have their explosives and firing pins removed, officers said they still contain trace amounts of primers or detonation devices that can explode on aircraft.

Both Premier-elect, Dalton McGuinty, and Governor-elect, Arnold Schwarzenegger, have inherited large fiscal problems from previous administrations. Both have large deficits, $10 billion in California and $4 billion in Ontario. If they want advice on how to lower their deficits, they should contact the next Prime Minister of Canada, the former Finance Minister, Paul Martin.(He handled one of the largest deficits in the G-8.)

Who is up to the challenge and who isn't should be evident over the next year.

Real People With Real Financial Problems

Recently, my wife and I moved into a lovely five-level backsplit on a quiet crescent. The house was over twenty years old and unfortunately, the A/C, the furnace and the shingles had to be replaced at the cost of $6100 Canadian. On top of that, I'm looking at extensive dental work that could cost me thousands more(despite having a so-so dental plan).

Well, welcome to the middle class. In Ontario, parents with university aged children could fork out thousands of dollars in order to qualify their children for student loans(It's a matching loan system that hits the middle class the hardest). Most students are saddled with student loans anywhere from $25,000 to $100,000.

My wife doesn't have a pension plan where she works, so she went back to school at her own expense to get a better job.

Bless her heart, since Irene left school at 13, she has worked hard assisting family members, first helping her father who was disabled at middle age and then practically raising three kids(from her ex)singlehandly. She deserves a break.

If I sell the script, Hotel California, soon, I'll be able to pay off Irene's tuition fees and help create a pension for her.

Wise Saying Of The Week
An old man, a boy and a donkey were going down to town. The boy rode on the donkey and the old man walked. As they went along, they passed some people who remarked it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy riding riding. The man and boy thought maybe the critics were right, so they changed positions. Later they passed some people who remarked."What a shame, he makes the little boy walk." They then decided they both would walk. Soon, they passed some people who thought they were stupid to walk they had a decent donkey to ride. So they both rode the donkey. Later, they passed some people who shamed them by saying how awful to put such a load on a poor donkey. The boy and the man said they were probably right, so they decided to carry the donkey. As they crossed a bridge, they lost their grip on the animal and it fell into the river and drowned. The moral of the story? If you try to please everyone, you might as well kiss your ass goodbye.

The Ontario Election

This time voters weren't bribed with their own money. Liberals ran on the platform of "no tax cuts" and won handily. In the real world, we know we have to pay for services like hydro, health and education. The results: Liberals 72, Conservatives 24, NDP, 7. The Liberal leader, Dalton McGuinty, ran a clean campaign on the issues rather than cheap shots towards his opponents.
