What Happened To The War On Terrorism?
In the fall of 2001, most of the world was united against terrorism and the Qaeda Network. From 2002, this unity slipped over Iraq and the Bush agenda there.

Like I said in an earlier blog entry, the focus should have been on Bin Laden and his Qaeda connections. Sure it would have taken a concerted effort from allied intelligence services around the world, but the union of the good people against the evil people would have been worth it.

Instead we're still getting this:

The Toronto Star's View On The Presidential Election
This is part of a recent Star editoral that you might find enlightening. With 150 dead school children in a Russian school, it appears that the main enemy Al Qaeda is still alive and well despite the capture of Saddam Hussein and the "liberation of Iraq". The article reads as follows:

"But for all their fear stoking and vitriol, the Republicans could not credibly rebut Democratic claims that Bush and Cheney have bungled the war on Al Qaeda. That they led America on a wild goose chase in Iraq that fomented extremism where there was none. That they recklessly alienated allies. And that they embody a "crony capitalism" that rewards the privileged and neglects the needy, even as it drives the nation deeper into debt.

Those charges have yet to be answered.

But in this season of simple-minded attack politics, American voters are unlikely to hear the candidates seriously debate these matters. Voters can only steel themselves for even nastier sound bites. Years after 9/11 Al Qaeda's impact continues to be felt. The fear factor still holds the world's mightiest nation firmly in its irrational grip."

The Bush Years Reviewed
After 9/11, Bush provided the US and the world with leadership against terrorism, specifically, Bin Laden and Al Qaeda. With much fanfare, the allies launched an attack against the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afganistan. Surprising many, the war was won quickly. However, the greatest prize, Bin Laden, escaped captured and continued to mock the US months and years afterwards.

Looking for another feather in his cap, George Bush took on Iraq based on questionable intelligence reports on WMDs.

As far as I can understand, the CIA was telling Bush what he wanted to hear in order to justify a war with Saddam Hussein(The son lessens the failures of the father by completing the conquest started in 1991.). Unfortunately, the weapons that were there in 1991 were not there in 2003.

The war in Iraq was costly to the US in terms of money and goodwill. Billions of dollars could have been funnelled to intelligence/military campaigns to root out and destroy Bin Laden/Al Qaeda instead of the Iraq war and its occupation. This didn't happened because Bush and his people went after an easy target(A tinpot dictator).

In weighing the pros and cons of his term in office, I would have to give George Bush a failing grade. Two stars, great start, but a lousy finish.

A Benny Shaved
About thirty years ago, a man by the name of Benny found an old oil lantern at Wasaga Beach. He took it home and started cleaning it. Suddenly, a genie appeared. He told Benny that he would grant him three wishes as long as he granted him one. "What would that be? Benny asked." "Don't shave for the rest of your life" replied the genie.
"What would happen if I did that?" inquired Benny. "I'd turn you into an urn", retorted the genie.

Benny agreed to the conditions and made his three wishes. With a good job leading to a government pension, he married and had ten children. As time went on, Benny's beard grew longer and longer until it reached the ground. His wife told him to shave it off or she'd leave him. Benny asserted that the genie would make him into a turn if he did that(Benny's memory wasn't that great.). Benny wife fired back "The genie hasn't been around for thirty years. He's not interested in you anymore."

Benny loved his wife and didn't want her to leave. He ran quickly to the bathroom and shaved off his beard.

The genie appeared and turned Benny into an urn. The morale of this story:

"A Benny shaved is a Benny urned."

Moview Review 80: Rio Bravo
Terrific cast makes this western oater into a superior picture. The secret to a great cowboy picture is to have lots of fun while despatching the bad guys. That's exactly what John Wayne, Dean Martin and Walter Brennan do in this picture. Three and a half stars.

The Golden Boys At Casino Rama
It's always great to step back into the era before the Beatles and the British Invasion.

Back in the late 50s and the early 60s, it was relatively easy to become a star in Philadelphia because Dick Clark and American Bandstand was produced there. In support of Dick, he usually let anyone with a record lipsynch it on his show.

If you were going to be an American Idol, you had to have a record in the top ten on the Billboard charts. This was true of Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, and even Fabian Forte. After 45 years of performing, they still enjoy entertaining the boomers. The music remains young(Fabian even got 20 seniors up on stage doing the twist).

There were many jokes(and laughs)about aging performers, sons, daughters and modern "Rock". The highlight of the evening to me was Bobby Rydell's tribute song(Mack The Knife)for Bobby Darin.

Lots of nostalgia sure, but also lots of fun from performers who don't take themselves too seriously. Three stars.
