Is William Hung A One Hit Wonder?
Many have commented on William Hung's talent or his lack of it. On seeing his "She Bangs video" again, I was impressed by the energy that he put into the performance. In the history of rock and roll, it was often high energy that sold a tune rather than vocal ability(e.g. Little Richard). Also note, that novelty songs were a staple of the 50s and 60s with such great nonsense like "Ahab The Arab","Monster Mash" and "Alvin's Harmonica".

William Hung is a refreshing throw back to the days when "Rock and Roll" didn't take itself to seriously.

Don't you think that Hong Kong Willy looks like Bucky The Beaver?

Movie Review 73: The Princess Diaries
Lets admit it. Julie Andrews would be your favourite grandmother even if she wasn't the queen of Slobovia. This is a well acted comedy/chick flick that is funny in some places and compassionate/meaningful in others.

Every teenager should be a princess and have a nana like Mary Poppins---er--Julie Andrews. Three stars.

Getting A Newfoundland Vasectomy
Mood:  not sure
After having their 11th child, a Newfoundland couple decided that was enough, as they could not afford a larger room.

So the husband went to his doctor/veterinarian and told him that he and his wife/cousin didn't want to have any more children.

The doctor told him that there was a procedure called a vasectomy that could fix the problem but that it was expensive. A less costly alternative, said the doctor, was to go home, get a firecracker, light it, put it in a beer can, then hold the can up to his ear and count to 10.

The Newfie said to the doctor, "I may not be the smartest man in the world, but I don't see how putting a firecracker in a beer can next to my ear is going to help me."

"Trust me," said the doctor.

So the man went home, lit a firecracker and put it in a beer can. He held the can up to his ear and began to count: "1" "2" "3" "4" "5" at which point he paused, placed the beer can between his legs, and resumed counting on his other hand.

This procedure also works in some parts of Brampton and Cambridge, Ontario.

Changes Needed For American Idol
Mood:  quizzical
It looks like "American Idol" has topped out as the biggest karaoke contest on the planet. The final episode was down substantially from last year.

Obviously, there should be more original material sung in this contest. This would also promote the works of songwriters who desperately need a break.

The song numbers could become production numbers like in a musical or a MTV video. This would raise the series up to a variety show. Maybe in 20 or 30 years, American Idol could be said in the same breath as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "American Bandstand".

American Idol Tampering
Mood:  down
Again Randy, Paula and Simon have attempted to crown Fantasia Barrino the America Idol. This is not good because the audience may choose Diana Degarmo via a backlash in the same way that they chose Jasmine over La Toya.

In my opinion, Diana is a better middle-of-the-road singer/performer than Fantasia who gives a "gospel/R&B rendition" each time out. However, I wouldn't like to see Diana selected American Idol for the wrong reasons.

The weakest thing about American Idol has been the lapdog and/or negative adjudications of the judges. Don't you think that successful music people like Dick Clark, Don Kurshner or Barry Gordy would do better?

A Memorial To Fallen Karaoke Singers
Over the last few years and recently, we've witnessed the passing away of excellent karaoke hosts and singers. None were rich or famous, but they touched the lives of hundreds and even thousands of people with their songs. This list includes Laurie Marcoux, Doug Wright, Ken and most recently Wayne of T&W Entertainment. Last night, we found out at Oscar's Roadhouse that Wayne had died from cancer. He will be missed. He was such a nice guy and a great country singer. I'm sure you know of others who enriched the world with song, but were prematurely taken away to sing heavenly karaoke. No doubt, there is a shortage of good singers in the universe and the best music is on planet earth. Karaoke has changed the world. After all, "American Idol" is just a big karaoke contest for young people. Karaoke Links

Movie Review 72: Master And Commander
While this film doesn't have the scope and power of "Sink The Bismarck", it does have three dimensional characters who are well portrayed by the ensemble case, especially, Russell Crowe as the man of war and Paul Bettany as the man of science.

The main problem with epics like these is that they run too long and have a tendency to meander on scenic and "special" material(The French point of view of this conflict appears non existent, probably because the director wanted to focus on the problems of the English crew.)

However, I'll give it three stars because I found the story a thinking man's adventure.

The Dave And Irene Show
Here we are auditioning for a department store mannequin contest in Brampton. We lost because we didn't look lifelike enough.
