This is one of the best biblical epics ever made. It's not preachy. It puts the events of the Crucifixion on personal level with the Roman Tribune, Marcellus (Richard Burton), who crucified Jesus.
Racked by quilt Marcellus goes to Jerusalem again to destroy Christ's Robe which he thinks has driven him mad. Needless to say, he is helped by members of the Early Church to find forgiveness and some meaning to life.
The Roman elite fear that Christianity will destroy "Imperial Rome" and take measures to suppress the religion.
There are many wonderful scenes between Marcellus, Demetrius (Victor Mature), Diane(Jean Simmons) and Simon Peter(Michael Rennie).
For those who are looking for a good Easter movie this week, I would recommend it wholeheartedly. Four Stars.
