Vote On Tentative Agreement Sept/13/03
I am recommending a "yes vote" on the Tentative Agreement. Here is the background and some of the best reasons for this decision:

Back in July, the chief shop steward for the WLPP, Jamie Ortiz, told us at the Toronto Exchange Office that the union would be going on strike in the middle of August because the mail volumes would be increasing then. He said there would be rotating strikes but when the Toronto Local went out they would stay out. This sounded like a good strategy towards getting a decent contract at the 11th hour.

* There would be no negotiating session extensions after Aug/18/03
* The MPs were on summer vacations and maximum pressure would be on Canada Post for concessions
* CUPW locals and the NEB were united on a strategy to get big gains for the membership
* On my staff, there seemed to be a high acceptance of this approach from the rank and file

As you may know, the solidarity on this plan disappeared when a tentative agreement seemed close later in July.

Most locals assumed a spectator role as the NEB acted unilaterally on the initial draft agreement.
What happened to the 11th hour timetable for August?

Like a hot potato, some locals fell out of solidarity with the NEB without mentioning the August deadline. Why? If solidarity of strategy and tactics were broken somewhere, then the members should know the details. Who's to blame?

Now the only game in town is the union fighting and weakening itself. CUPW suffers because of these splits because no one seems willing to find out the "real whys" and correct them. We've moved from "The strike smart position" to "the strike stupid position."

With the high union dues that we pay each month, we should demand smart successful tactics and strategies from local and national executives instead of enforced legislative settlements like in 1987, 1991 and 1997.

Move Review 43: Moulin Rouge
Mood:  down
Great costumes, one great song and dance: "Lady Marmalade." The rest of it was practically unwatchable. This includes bad singing/dancing and over the top acting. There are great modern musicals out there like "Grease", "Tommy" and "Godspell", but this one is way out of that league. Perhaps, you have a different opinion. One and a half stars.

Movie Review 42: Phantasm
Mood:  cool
Very original thriller that had incredible mysteries connected to it. Some made sense. Some didn't. I was pulled into the story line even with this film's warped logic. Well worth a viewing. Three stars.

Scary Supernatural Villains
Without a doubt, there's a big appetite for scary supernatural monsters that are practically unkillable. Even over-exposed slice and dice bullies like Jason, Freddy and the Creeper have a large following. I call them bullies because they like to pick on beings that are much weaker than themselves.

In my screenplay, Hotel California, the antagonists are a powerful mysterious group in Area 53 called "the caretakers" who abduct humans and run strange experiments on them. The actual place of these experiments is hidden by fantasy worlds that "entertain" the guests at the hotel.

Can you play the ancient Katimavik game and discover its terrible secrets?

Number One At The Boxoffice: Jeepers Creepers 2
Mood:  spacey
The thrills may be cheap and the reviews bad, but "Jeepers Creepers Two" delivers the shocks that its audience wants.
The reviews are entertaining too.

Read the lyrics.

Top Ten Karaoke Favourites
Mood:  lyrical
Over the last ten years, I've enjoyed singing in karaoke bars very much. I've discovered that upbeat 50s and 60s music is still well-liked. While I enjoy the music of Al Jolson, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra and Nate King Cole, they're not that popular with karaoke audiences that prefer rock and roll.

Below are my top ten karaoke crowd-pleasing songs:
1.Burning Love 2.Hang On Sloppy 3.Devil With The Blue Dress 4.Little Devil 6.Cracklin' Rose 7.The Wonder Of You 8.The Wanderer 9.Roll Over Beethoven
10.All Shook Up
Al Jolson is my favourite singer of all time. Here is his website.

Movie Review 41: The Sum Of All Fears
Slow moving plot gradually picks up speed towards a spine tingling ending. Terrorists get hold of an A-bomb which they plant in Baltimore, USA. Story has interesting stuff to say about truthful information and disinformation, but the film runs in many confusing directions that reduces the tension until half way through. Movie should have been carefully edited to one and half hours instead of two. Two and half stars.

Review: The Canadian National Exhibition
Mood:  happy
The "Ex" is over a hundred and twenty-five years old. It always has something for everybody. My favourite is the air show this weekend.
See you there or see you square.
Three stars.

Joke Of The Week
Mood:  hug me
A dog limps into an old western town. He spies a saloon and and manages to drag himself through the swinging doors. The music and the commotion stop as all eyes are upon him. With considerable pain, he climbs onto a bar stool and orders a bottle of whiskey which he guzzles down. He looks into the bartender's eyes and says, "I just want to know who shot my paw."
The dog's day job.

We All Should Have A Dream
When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
